Geriatric Objectives:

  1. Describe the pathology of the lesions with hypertrophic gastric mucosal folds such as Menetriere’s disease.

  2. List the factors that increase the risk that NSAID use will result in ulcer. Include the special risks and presentations of NSAID ulcer disease in the elderly.

  3. In what elderly population are acute diarrheal disorders especially important? Why is this population more severely affected?

  4. List four medications that are likely to contribute to constipation in the elderly. List three chronic conditions in older patients in which constipation is likely.

  5. Describe the influence of age and sex of the patient on the likely cause of acute pancreatitis.
